One of "Renaissance Pair". Big, bold, beautiful 17th century couple were reliable money makers for the baker who owned them - briskly selling cookies to lovers to exchange as a token of affection or betrothal (the era pre-dated engagement rings). The clothing was richer than the couple might ever own – similar to our leasing of a limousine for a wedding. Stunning as papercasts, springerle or cut into "Puzzle Cookies", they were originally for gingerbread cookies.... perhaps even gilded with gold leaf which served variously as love potions, medicine, or conspicuous consumption!
